Starts: 19:30

The Religion of the Yellow Stick

Online talk by Prof. Callum Beck

Organised by Society of Highland & Island Historical Research. Free to members, non-members requested to make donation of £5 to society funds. For further details, booking and joining details see the Society's website.

The ‘Religion of the Yellow Stick’ is a facetious label used in the Hebrides and in Prince Edward Island, Canada, to describe a persecution of “Catholicks” by a Presbyterian laird in the outer Hebrides. The two lairds, Islands and times most often associated with this title are MacLean of Coll on Rum in 1725 and Boisdale on South Uist in 1770, but there are about 15 historical contexts with which it has been associated. This talk will demonstrate the originating event underlying this label and trace the rise of the variant versions.

It will focus on three main modules: oral history, research and creating displays. There will be three half day training sessions on Thursday 15th February, 14th March and 11th April before each module starts. Trainees will also be expected to attend these sessions and at least the first session of each module, on 22nd February, 21st March and 18th April 10:30-12:30, and are encouraged to attend subsequent sessions where there will be opportunities to lead a session for those who wish. All sessions will take place in person at Dornoch.

Thanks to the generosity of Prof Janet Nelson, we are also able to offer two bursaries of £500 for students who wish to take part, with preference given to those studying history. Deadline to apply is 8th February 2024.
